In ancient times, sleep was referred to as the little brother of death because it was believed to shut down bodily functions. In fact, around 9 p.m., the body enters a resting phase: gastric acid production decreases, blood pressure drops, and breathing becomes shallower and more regular. Muscles relax.
Around 3 a.m., the heart rate drops to about 50 beats per minute, and body temperature decreases by around 0.5°C. However, while externally the body rests and bodily functions slow down, the hormonal system is very active during the night. In the evening, the pineal gland begins to release the hormone melatonin, which slows down metabolism – the body winds down. During deep sleep, growth hormones are also increasingly released, supporting physical regeneration. For example, they increase the speed at which epidermal cells divide at night, renewing the skin during sleep.
The immune system also does not rest while we sleep. Macrophages are particularly active during sleep, and it's not for nothing that the body demands more sleep when fighting an infection – sleep is famously the best medicine. Likewise, some other organs have activity peaks, such as the liver around 2 a.m. It converts nutrients, especially carbohydrates into fat. If there are too many, it comes with often undesired side effects.
Sleep deprivation is not only tormenting but also bad for health, as all organs depend on nightly repair processes. If the body is busy breaking down alcohol or other toxins, it prevents crucial regeneration processes. Sleep deprivation and an unhealthy lifestyle are thus drivers of intrinsic – or internally caused – skin aging.
