Facial Cleansing Under the Microscope
The physiological significance of the cleansing method for the skin is often underestimated. It is the first crucial step in effective skincare. Thorough yet gentle on the skin barrier, it should be.
It should remove dirt and excess skin oil on the surface, but not too much, so the skin doesn't dry out. Strong alkaline soaps, overly harsh cleansing agents can strip away too much of the skin's protective barrier, throwing it out of balance. It's all about finding the right balance!
Different preparations, cleansing oil, gel, foam, milk, are merely textures. The degree of cleansing power is determined by the type and amount of cleansing agents. A gel can generally cleanse mildly, and an oil can cleanse intensely.
The requirement is paramount.
Each cleansing removes a part of the skin surface film = hydrolipid mantle, thus slightly throwing the skin out of balance. Because it contains moisture factors, fats, and useful microorganisms that serve as a protective barrier. It functions in the slightly acidic pH 5.5 environment. SOAPs are inherently alkaline and disrupt the acidic environment that particularly protects against bacteria. The more aggressive the cleansing, the greater the disruption of the natural protective barrier = acid mantle. Without help, the skin needs several hours to restore this condition. The facial tonic can help restore the acidic pH. Then it's immediately protected again. This is especially important for acne or sensitive skin.
Too strong cleansing products can promote an irritation-prone, dry, and itchy skin condition. High-quality, balanced cleansing products are therefore a good investment for healthy, balanced skin.
DR.BELTER cleansing products consider these balance aspects and are completely free of aggressive soaps. They generally use gentle plant-based cleansing agents that do not wash out the protective barrier and contain re-fattening substances. Incorporated into different textures, they have slightly different cleansing profiles for an individual skincare experience.
The need to cleanse the skin is probably as old as humanity itself.
The use of muds and natural pigments is found across cultures among indigenous peoples and, besides water, is probably the oldest form of cleansing. Clay, chalk, or sea mud were also used for protection against the sun and as adornment. To cleanse, the mud is applied and then dries on the skin, absorbing the skin oils in which dirt is bound. When the mud is removed, sebum and dirt are dissolved. Even today, we still appreciate this deep-cleansing effect. Clay masks and chalk masks work precisely on this "adsorptive" principle. The large surface area of the tiny earth pigments binds skin oils. When an earth mask dries on the skin and is then removed, it takes away bound dirt and skin oils. This effect is so intense that we now call it deep cleansing.
Historically, hygiene and care gained new significance with the use of mirrors.
Early mirrors made of obsidian were first discovered in a Neolithic settlement in southern Turkey. Bronze mirrors then appeared in Greece and Egypt. Water and milk were the preferred cleansing agents in ancient cultures, with anointment using animal fats, night masks, and makeup with pigments as beauty aids.
The earliest evidence of soap usage dates back approximately five thousand years. Archaeologists found Sumerian cuneiform script detailing a recipe for making a cleansing agent prepared by mixing and cooking potash with animal or vegetable oils. The Romans had a pronounced bathing culture and used natron, potash, salt, flour paste, bean meal, or various types of earth. "Sapo" consisted of fat and ash. It reacted alkaline on the skin and was rather aggressive.
