The skin in winter - perfect protection against dry indoor air
The skin is a very special organ. It is our important and highly lively barrier between the body and the environment. With an area of approximately 1.75 m² and a weight of approximately 9 kg, it is the largest of all organs. 1 cm² of it consists of 3 to 5 million cells, 3 blood vessels, 10 hairs, 12 nerves, 15 sebaceous glands, and 100 sweat glands.
Its functions are extremely diverse: protection against pressure, protection against chemical substances, protection against the penetration of microorganisms, protection against water loss, or dehydration are paramount. In addition, there is the thermoregulation of the body through the vascular system of the dermis and the activity of the sweat glands.
Another dimension is the absorption and transmission of stimuli and information. As a sensory organ, its touch can perceive boundaries, temperature, pain, vibration, pleasure, and last but not least, arousal.
Seasons – Rollercoaster of Emotions
As a border organ, the skin is confronted with different environmental situations during the seasons and must adapt to external conditions. Each season brings its own challenges. The skin is in constant contact with the air and naturally responds to temperature and humidity changes.
Temperature changes in winter
In winter, the skin experiences rapidly changing temperatures. In the cold, peripheral blood vessels constrict to protect the organism from cooling down. However, this reduces the nutrient supply to the skin. The sebaceous glands produce less sebum = skin fat, consequently reducing barrier lipids available. This can lead to increased sensitivity. Moreover, temperature changes are stressful for skin types with fragile blood vessels, where the veins cannot contract as well as needed due to genetic predisposition. In the cold, metabolism generally slows down, especially cell renewal, and as a result, repair processes are reduced.
Humidity factor
Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in the air. Humidity depends on the temperature of the air. In warm temperatures, the gas (air) expands and thus retains more moisture. The opposite happens at low temperatures: the volume of air decreases, and excess moisture is expelled. Condensation occurs, known as dew.
Now comes the cucial point in winter:
The evil, evil heating air - but why?
The heater constantly heats up newly incoming air. In doing so, the cold air absorbs moisture from the environment during heating. Even from the skin! So moisture is withdrawn from the skin. So when we talk about "dry heating air" as a burden, that's not quite right - it's the warming heating air that dries out the skin by absorbing moisture from the environment!
Effect:
• Eyes and mucous membranes dry out more quickly.
• We experience rough, dry, particularly needy skin.
• More frequent skin irritations such as redness and inflammation.
• We quickly develop chapped lips.
Conclusion: Our skin can greatly benefit from increased and specialized care during the winter.
The logical objectives for winter are:
Replenish the skin barrier, also known as the lipid barrier, by using products enriched with skin-friendly lipids to contribute to its self-protection. Use slightly richer products and indulge the skin with masks at home.
Provide more moisture: Serums and moisture ampoules are perfect for creating a moisture reservoir.
Protect and care for the sensitive eye area, achieving a particularly supple eye area in winter with an eye balm used as a night treatment.
Boost cell renewal and vitalize metabolism: For many skin types, a fruit acid treatment or fruit acid night care visibly contributes to skin renewal and refinement of the skin's appearance.
Dry body skin, partly caused by tights that absorb skin moisture and sebum, also deserves a bit more attention. Balsamic scrubs and rich body creams are especially beneficial, ideally combined with a sauna session.
Winter, in particular, offers many beautiful moments of retreat that can be utilized for rituals of care and self-love. After all, a healthy, well-groomed body is a precious asset.
